The Bedford police began a new initiative of on-the-ground walk-throughs in various neighborhoods of the Town of Bedford, beginning with the neighborhood near the John Early Apartments. The intent of the canvassing was to informally engage with the residents at street level. John Early Apartments is a 78-unit residence for seniors, acquired by Virginia United Methodist Housing Development Corporation in 2008.

Virginia United Methodist Housing Development Corporation completes rehabilitation of 108-unit Springhill Village Apartments in Staunton, VA

ROANOKE, VA – Springhill United Methodist Housing, L.P., announces the successful completion of construction and comprehensive rehabilitation of the Springhill Village apartments. The project consists of 108-unit garden-style apartments for families located in Staunton, VA.  Through the refinancing and renovation, the project will continue to be classified as affordable housing, operating under a 30-year agreement with VHDA.  The development sponsor is Virginia United Methodist Housing Development Corporation (“VUMHDC”), headquartered in Roanoke, VA.

The rehabilitation, begun in December 2018, was performed by Metro Group (Richmond), with the project design by Winks-Snowa Architects (Richmond) and Blackwell Engineering (Harrisonburg).  Kadilak Consulting, LLC was the construction manager for the owner.  Total cost for design and construction was approximately $6million.

VUMHDC will be holding a grand opening celebration at the site on May 6, 2019.

Financing for the project incorporated tax-exempt bonds issued through the Staunton Redevelopment and Housing Authority and purchased by TD Bank, Low Income Housing Tax Credits administered by the Virginia Housing Development Authority and an FHA loan through the HUD 221d4 program, originated by Highland Commercial Mortgage.  The participants in the Springhill LP are CAHEC, the investor limited partner and non-profit tax credit syndicator from Raleigh, NC, and the general partner, VUM Springhill Housing Corporation of Roanoke, VA, which is owned by VUMHDC.  Perseverance Capital Advisors, LLC served as financial advisor to VUMHDC.

VUMHDC is a 501C (4) non-profit corporation founded in 1975 as a developer and sponsor of affordable housing communities in Virginia.  The mission of VUMHDC is to expand the supply of affordable housing, to meet the growing need for safe, quality, affordable housing for low-and-moderate income Virginians. Today VUMHDC owns and operates 18 affordable housing communities totaling 1100 units and is the non-profit minority partner in 17 additional communities, totaling 900 units, all located in Virginia.  More information can be obtained at www.vaumhdc.org.
